Fun with Moss

I have been obsessed with these faux moss-covered rocks from the Dollar Store, and I have been trying to find any use for them that I can! The other day, I finally took down the twiggy winter wreath from the front door, and decided that I wanted something a little brighter. Enter: the Dollar Store.

I bought about seven bags of these styrofoam rocks (I was already hoarding two bags at my house) and several other things at the dollar store. I bought the wicker wreath you see in the background, but about halfway through this project I decided that it would have been much easier if I had bought a flat-fronted styrofoam wreath.

Each bag has five "rocks" in it, about two large ones, and three little rocks that look like chicken nuggets.

First, I seperated all of the larger rocks from the nuggets, with the intention of putting them on the wreath first and using the smaller ones as fillers.

Things didn't work out as I had planned, so I had to fit the pieces together like a puzzle, alternating between large and small rocks.

It might look lumpy from the side, but that's alright.

To maximize the number of rocks I had, I cut some of the smaller ones in half, and glues the styrofoam side down on the wreath. It's actually easier to do this, because not only do you get more rocks, but the cut ones fit into the puzzle better.

Halfway there, and looking pretty lumpy.

Almost finished! (See the wreath underneath the rocks? That's where the rock that have been cut in half come in handy).

Some white satin ribbon, and all done!

Hi there! Doesn't my hair look awesome?!

Although it looks cute on the mirror, I decided to put the wreath back on the door.

All in all, this wreathh cost be about $10 and about 5,683 glue sticks. Okay, not reeeeeally 5,683 glue sticks, but almost.

  1. What an adorable idea!! I have a ton of those moss "rocks" that I've picked up at Dollar Tree and Michaels. I think I'll have to make a wreath now!

  2. You are so creative Shannon! I have seen those "rocks" at Dollar Tree too but didn't know what I would do with them. Your wreath is great looking and unique.

  3. I love the look of that wreath! Too bad I combed through both Michael's and Hobby Lobby and wasn't able to find any mossy rocks :(

I love your comments like I love a glass of red wine, a slow Van Morrison song, and freshly swiffered floors...which is, like, a lot.
