Ikea Hack / My Office Desk

In an attempt to overcome the impossible, I am posting about the same thing, twice in a row. I first mentioned my plans for the office last October, and then I mentioned that I had started working on it last week. I usually get sidetracked by a million other things in the house, but I am determined to get this office done in a timely manner. Here's a picture of what it looked like, last time I left you:

In the mood board that I created for the room, I included a trestle desk. I knew that I really wanted this look (and maybe something lighter?), but I wasn't sure where I could find it on a budget. Enter: IKEA.

I bought this table top:

and a pair of these trestle legs:

And for a whopping $55, I had myself a trestle desk in a nice white lacquered finish.

I put the legs together, and channeled my inner Beyonce by sending my Husband this text:

After I finished shaking my hips and whipping my hair back and forth (all while looking like this, I'm sure), I gave the legs a nice coat of metallic gold, and BOOM. Here she is:

I have really been craving that shiny, lacquered look recently.

I pushed the desk up in front of the window so it's nice and bright. And with the hope of warmer weather around the corner, I'm hoping I can sit here with the windows open soon!

I love how the gold legs really give the desk a luxe, more expensive look.

I'm so in love with how it looks! Now on to hiding those pesky cords...

What's on my desktop, you might ask? Oh, just an over-sized foo dog from TJ Maxx, coffee in an Anthro mug, my cell phone, and a note pad for doodling.

I snagged a pair of hammered chrome candle holders at Z Gallerie back in the day...and I just found out that they make great coasters!

I could put one of these lucite trays from The Container Store in every room. This one holds my bracelets and watch (that I inevitably take off when I start typing), a candle, and some pretty notecards.

I snagged this light at HomeGoods for $10. I'm thinking of painting it gold, or black with gold leafing inside the shade. I'll keep you posted once I decide!

I'm still trying to decide on a desk chair. The bamboo chairs that you saw in the last post were a Habitat ReStore find, but need to be painted and reupholstered.

So not bad for $55, plus some spray paint! I'm in love with it, and I'm so excited about how the office is coming along!

Next up: an unconventional curtain rod & some Cynthia Rowley curtain panels.

I'm participating in the

  4. I'm amazed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a blog that's both equally educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail
on the head. The issue is something not enough folks are speaking intelligently about.

I am very happy I came across this during my hunt for something regarding this.

  10. This is so pretty!! I love that you painted the legs gold. I just did a similar desk, but mine's a little more rustic. I almost used the same top you have from IKEA, but ended up upholstering a piece of plywood for mine. (it's here if you'd like to see it: http://richerfullerbe.blogspot.com/2013/01/operation-reorganization-desk-reveal.html).

  12. Love it. Amazing how much the gold changed the whole look, can't believe it was only $55! You could totally paint that chair frame the same gold and re-cover the cushion in chevron!!

I love your comments like I love a glass of red wine, a slow Van Morrison song, and freshly swiffered floors...which is, like, a lot.
